"Life goes on... and death as well. Sadly." - From The League of Free Worlds Anthem

The League of Free Worlds, also known as the League, was a resistance organization dedicated to freeing the Colonies from the oppression of Earth and to maintain order throughout the colonies under a unified defensive alliance, eventually becoming a sovereign power in their own right.

Led by a mysterious figure known only as The Father and coordinated by a military command and defense council based on the planet Acheron in the Gallonigher system, the League of Free Worlds initiated an uprising that lasted several centuries against the Earth Empire during the First Colony War, which lasted until the 5th millennium. In 4620, after an ill-conceived military expedition into Gallonigher resulted in a major defeat for the Colonial Navy, the League launched a successful counteroffensive into Draco and continued onwards towards Sol, successfully shattering the Earth Empire's control over the Colonies in the process. However, their advance was stalled by fierce resistance inside the Sol system itself as the Empire found the prospect of a slow and lingering death to be preferable to the possibility of the League's final victory. The League, deciding that they had done well enough, fell back and sealed the Warp Hole as they left, containing their former enemies to one depleted system.

In the aftermath, the League now faced a dilemma. In the event of victory over the Earth Empire, the League had intended to disband as the individual colonies were to be granted self-determination. However, the ambiguous conclusion to the centuries-long conflict led to the League instead assuming a more assertive role in governing as they tried maintaining order and stability, becoming a sovereign power in its own right. As they began expanding into new, previously unexplored systems and setting up a new capital system at Boreas, the Father assumed a role not unlike that of the fallen Tsar. While not as oppressive or autocratic as the Earth Empire had been, the League was now a shadow of the ideals it had once fought for.

Years later, a resurgent Colonial Navy broke out of Sol and launched a savage surprise attack on Gallonigher, initiating the Second Colony War. The Navy, now under the leadership of former League pilot Kron Daker, aggressively pushed towards Boreas despite the League's best efforts, but both sides were caught off-guard when an unknown alien species appeared in the Boreas system and fired upon both the League and the Navy with the apparent intention of exterminating humanity. Recognizing the danger, the League allied themselves with the Navy and neutralized the threat before killing the deposed Kron, whose background was then shared with the Navy by the League. From this point forward, the League and Navy maintained a tense détente, with the Colonial Navy being allowed to keep the worlds they had seized from the League during the Second Colony War as they collectively faced the prospect of a livelier galaxy.

In the following decades, sporadic outbreaks of violence between the League and Navy were interrupted by occasional alien contact, eventually pitting them and the Navy against the Sha'Har and the Empiret during the Red Sun Incident. The League would once again join forces witht the Navy to launch a combined offensive into the Gulf of Tears towards the Sha'Har homeworld in what would become known as the Gulf War, which would prove disastrous for the League as tensions led to the Navy unexpectedly pulling out of the offensive, despite early successes against the Sha'Har. Unable to continue the offensive alone, the League fleet returned home in tatters, resulting in the Third Colony War which would see the League of Free Worlds transform into the reactionary New League, before this too was replaced by the New Empire under the leadership of Tsar Xerxes Abrohamin I, also known as Abrohamin the Bright.
